Using a handheld GPS or an app during Self-Guided Lycian Way hikes

For Self-Guided programs we suggest having a GPS (Global Positioning System) device or an app like Wikiloc, Alltrails, Komoot, MapsMe.

Most of the Lycian Way paths are visible and well waymarked however GPS is crucial during hiking or trekking for several reasons. Let’s have a quick reminder:

  1. Navigation: A GPS provides accurate location information, helping hikers to navigate through unfamiliar terrain. This is especially useful in areas with limited or no signage, dense forests, or complex trail systems.

  2. Safety: In case of getting lost or disoriented, a GPS allows hikers to pinpoint their exact location and plan the safest route back to civilization or to their campsite. This can prevent potentially dangerous situations, such as wandering off-trail or into hazardous areas.

  3. Emergency Situations: In case of an emergency, such as injury or sudden illness, a GPS can help rescuers locate the hiker quickly and precisely. Many GPS devices also offer emergency features, allowing users to send distress signals and call for help.

  4. Route Planning: GPS devices often come with mapping features that enable hikers to plan their routes in advance, taking into account factors like distance, elevation gain, and terrain difficulty. This helps hikers make informed decisions and optimize their hiking experience.

  5. Tracking Progress: Hikers can use GPS to track their progress along the trail, monitor their speed, and estimate the time it will take to reach their destination. This information is valuable for staying on schedule and adjusting plans as needed.

  6. Geocaching and Waypoints: GPS devices can be used for geocaching activities or marking waypoints along the trail, allowing hikers to discover hidden treasures or remember important landmarks for future reference.

In summary, having a GPS during hiking or trekking enhances safety, provides navigation assistance, aids in emergency situations, facilitates route planning, tracks progress, and enables additional recreational activities like geocaching. It’s an essential tool for outdoor enthusiasts to enjoy their adventures responsibly and confidently.
