Combining Walking and Culture in Mardin and Tur Abdin
Walking in Mardin and Tur Abdin can combine historic streets, archaeological sites, village visits and a full-day valley hike. The right programme depends on how far you want to walk and how much time you would like to spend exploring cultural sites.
Our tailor-made journeys connect selected walks and visits with road transfers. They are not a continuous walking trail between all the places mentioned below.
Cehennem Valley: A Full-Day Walk in İdil, Şırnak
The
Cehennem Valley route in İdil, Şırnak, is approximately
16 km and takes around
6–7 hours. It is a
moderate walk, best planned as the main activity of the day rather than combined with an extensive sightseeing schedule.
Transfers need to be arranged around the walk, taking account of your accommodation and the following day’s programme. Spring and autumn are the preferred seasons; the final arrangements depend on weather, local access and route conditions.
- Location: İdil, Şırnak
- Distance: approximately 16 km
- Walking time: approximately 6–7 hours
- Difficulty: moderate
- Preferred seasons: spring and autumn
- Time to allow: a full day, with transfers arranged separately
What If You Prefer Less Walking?
We plan the Cehennem Valley walk as a complete route. We do not offer a shortened version within this programme.
If you would prefer less walking, we can arrange a separate alternative around the
Cizre Cultural Route, Dara Yardere Valley or Hasankeyf. These options provide different experiences and are selected according to your interests and the wider itinerary.
The precise walking distance, terrain and visiting schedule for an alternative are discussed during planning. A cultural day may still involve steps, uneven surfaces and time on your feet, so please explain any mobility requirements before confirming the programme.
Exploring Old Mardin and Midyat on Foot
Walking through Old Mardin and Midyat gives you time to appreciate stone architecture, lanes and the changing views between buildings. These visits can be adapted to your interests in photography, architecture, local crafts or everyday street life.
Historic-town walks have a different rhythm from a valley hike. You may cover less distance while spending longer at individual places, with stops and visits shaping the day.
Dara: Archaeology and the Surrounding Landscape
A visit to
Dara Ancient City can be included in a cultural programme from Mardin. If walking is a particular interest, we can discuss a separate walk in
Dara Yardere Valley and adjust the other visits accordingly.
Rather than adding a longer walk to an already full sightseeing day, we agree on the balance between archaeology and walking when designing your itinerary.
Monasteries and Syriac Village Visits
Visits to
Deyrulzafaran and Mor Gabriel monasteries, together with selected Syriac villages, can form part of the wider journey. Road transfers connect the places chosen for your programme.
Religious sites remain places of worship and community life. Visits follow local opening and access arrangements, and entry to individual village churches cannot be assumed.
Please respect photography restrictions and ask permission before photographing people or private spaces. Village visits do not automatically include private home visits or meetings with residents.
Choosing the Right Programme
Tell us the distance you are comfortable walking, your experience of uneven terrain and whether you prefer a full hiking day or shorter walks between cultural visits. Your available dates and number of days help us select a practical route.
For a regional journey, explore our
Mardin and Tur Abdin tour. For a longer trip connecting the region with Mount Nemrut, Şanlıurfa and Göbeklitepe, see our

Further travel towards Van and Hakkari can be discussed as a separately planned extension, with additional days and arrangements suited to the season and your interests.
