How Many Days Do You Need in Mardin and Tur Abdin?

We recommend four days for a comfortably paced journey combining old Mardin, the ancient city of Dara, Midyat and the principal monasteries of the region. This provides a practical starting point for exploring the area’s architecture, archaeology and Syriac heritage.

For a broader journey, allow an additional two to three days for selected extensions, such as a walk in Cehennem Valley, churches and Syriac settlements in the Şırnak region, or a visit to Hasankeyf. Tur Abdin – A Cultural Landscape of Upper Mesopotamia

Tur Abdin is a limestone plateau in southeastern Turkey centred around Midyat and extending across a landscape of villages, churches, monasteries, vineyards and agricultural land.

The region has been particularly important to the Syriac Orthodox community for centuries. Its religious landscape includes a remarkable concentration of historic churches and monasteries, several of which continue to function today.

The Late Antique and Medieval churches and monasteries of Midyat and the surrounding Tur Abdin region are currently included on Turkey’s UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List.

Mardin – Architecture, Faith & the Mesopotamian Landscape

Mardin provides one of the most recognisable gateways to this journey. Its historic stone architecture overlooks the Mesopotamian plain, while its streets, religious buildings and neighbourhoods reflect several historical and cultural layers.

We prefer to explore the historic city at walking pace where possible. This allows time to look beyond individual monuments and consider architecture, local food, religious traditions and everyday urban life together.

Mardin can form either the beginning or the end of the journey depending on flight arrangements, the number of days available and the wider route through southeastern Turkey.

Midyat – Stone Architecture & Living Heritage

Midyat is one of the natural bases for exploring Tur Abdin. Its stone architecture, narrow streets and surrounding villages introduce the characteristic limestone landscape of the region.

But the importance of Midyat goes beyond architecture. The town and surrounding countryside provide an opportunity to discuss the communities, languages, religious traditions and changing social history of southeastern Anatolia.

Spending time in Midyat also allows us to reach monasteries, villages and walking routes without treating the town simply as an overnight stop.

Mor Gabriel Monastery & the Monastic Landscape

Mor Gabriel is one of the most important monasteries of Tur Abdin. Textual traditions associate its foundation with the late fourth century, while much of the surviving historic architecture belongs to later periods, particularly the sixth century.

Rather than treating the monastery as an isolated monument, we place it within the wider religious landscape of Tur Abdin and the development of Syriac Christianity in the region.

The monastery remains part of a living religious tradition, making the experience different from visiting an archaeological site or abandoned historic monument.

Walking Through Tur Abdin

Walking gives this programme a different rhythm from a conventional cultural tour. Selected routes can connect villages, valleys, agricultural landscapes and religious sites while allowing more time to understand the geography of the plateau.

The amount of walking is flexible. The example programme includes longer walking days, but these are not compulsory elements of every Tur Abdin Mardin tour. We can replace longer routes with shorter walks and additional cultural visits according to the group, season and available number of days.

The purpose of walking here is not simply to cover distance. It allows us to experience the relationship between settlements, monasteries, agricultural land and the wider landscape of Upper Mesopotamia.

Cehennem Valley Walk in İdil, Şırnak

For travellers who would like a full day of walking, we can include Cehennem Valley in İdil, Şırnak, as part of an extended or a seperate tailor-made programme. The route is approximately 16 km and takes around 6–7 hours. We classify it as a moderate walk and recommend planning it in spring or autumn.

This is a full-day activity, rather than a short stop between cultural visits. It suits travellers who are comfortable spending several hours on foot.

We do not offer a shortened version of this particular route. If you prefer less walking or an easier alternative, we can instead discuss the Cizre Cultural Route, Dara Yardere Valley or Hasankeyf. These are separate alternatives, selected according to your interests, preferred walking level and final itinerary.

Villages, Vineyards & Local Encounters

Tur Abdin is not an archaeological landscape frozen in the past. Its villages and religious communities form part of a living cultural environment.

Where appropriate and possible, the journey may include local encounters, village visits and opportunities to learn about regional food and wine traditions. These experiences depend on the confirmed itinerary and local availability and should not be understood as guaranteed staged visits.

We prefer to leave enough flexibility in the programme for genuine encounters rather than turning every local experience into a scheduled attraction.

Dara – The Eastern Roman Frontier

South-east of Mardin, Dara introduces another important historical layer. The city developed as a major fortified settlement on the eastern frontier of the Roman Empire in the early sixth century, facing the Sasanian world.

Its fortifications, water systems, rock-cut features and surrounding landscape make Dara particularly valuable when considered within the wider geography between Mardin and Mesopotamia.

Depending on the final programme, the archaeological visit can also be combined with a selected walk through the surrounding landscape.

Deyrulzafaran Monastery & the Landscape Around Mardin

Deyrulzafaran is another major centre of Syriac Orthodox heritage and served as the seat of the Syriac Orthodox Patriarchate from 1293 until 1932.

Depending on the final programme and walking conditions, the monastery can be approached as part of a wider exploration of the landscape outside Mardin rather than simply as a vehicle-based visit.

Its location also provides an opportunity to understand the relationship between the historic city of Mardin, the surrounding hills and the Mesopotamian plain.

One of the most interesting aspects of Tur Abdin is continuity. Syriac remains the liturgical language of the region’s churches, while Turoyo, a modern Neo-Aramaic language, continues to be spoken within the community.

Day 1 – Şırnak, Tur Abdin Villages, Mor Gabriel & Midyat

The example journey begins with arrival at Şırnak Airport, with flight and transfer arrangements confirmed before travel.

We then enter the wider Tur Abdin landscape. Depending on arrival time, local conditions and the final route, the afternoon can include a selected walk through rural landscapes and villages associated with the region’s Yazidi and Syriac communities.

Where appropriate and arranged in advance, there may also be opportunities for local encounters and to learn about regional food or wine traditions. We do not treat private family visits as guaranteed components of the programme.

We continue to Mor Gabriel Monastery, one of the most important centres of Syriac Orthodox heritage in Tur Abdin. Textual sources associate its foundation with AD 397, although much of its surviving historic architecture dates to later periods.

We finish the day in Midyat for dinner and overnight accommodation.

Day 2 – Walking Through the Tur Abdin Landscape

Today is dedicated to experiencing the rural landscape on foot. The exact walking route is selected according to season, local access, weather conditions and the preferred walking level of the group.

A longer itinerary can explore valleys, village landscapes and sections associated with the Tigris region, while a shorter version can combine selected walks with additional villages, churches or monasteries.

The aim is not simply to cover distance. Walking allows us to understand the relationship between settlements, agriculture, limestone terrain and the religious landscape of Tur Abdin.

We return to Midyat for our second night.

Day 3 – Dara Ancient City, Landscape Walk & Mardin

We leave Midyat and travel towards Dara, an important fortified settlement developed on the eastern frontier of the Roman Empire in the early sixth century.

Its position helps explain the strategic geography between the Eastern Roman and Sasanian worlds. We explore the archaeological remains and discuss the city’s fortifications, water systems and wider landscape.

Depending on season, local access and walking level, the archaeological visit can be followed by a selected walk through the surrounding countryside. The exact route and distance are confirmed as part of the final programme.

We then continue to Mardin for dinner and overnight accommodation. Where possible, we prefer accommodation within or close to the historic city so that Mardin can also be explored on foot.

Day 4 – Mardin, Deyrulzafaran & Departure

Our final day combines Mardin with the Syriac heritage of the surrounding landscape.

Depending on the final programme, we can walk through parts of the historic city and continue with a selected route towards Deyrulzafaran Monastery, or use vehicle support and shorter walks if preferred.

Deyrulzafaran served as the seat of the Syriac Orthodox Patriarchate from 1293 until 1932 and remains one of the important religious centres associated with the region.

After the visit, we return towards Mardin according to your departure schedule and transfer to Mardin Airport if included in the confirmed arrangements.

Shorter & Longer Tur Abdin Tours

The four-day itinerary is only an example. If you have fewer days, we can concentrate on Midyat, Mor Gabriel, Mardin and Deyrulzafaran. With additional time, we can include more of the rural Tur Abdin landscape, villages and walking routes.
