Lycian Way Hiking Direction – Which Way Should You Walk?
One of the first questions when planning the Lycian Way is surprisingly simple:
which direction should you walk?
There is no compulsory
Lycian Way hiking direction. You can walk from Fethiye towards Antalya or travel in the opposite direction. Both are possible, and many hikers walk only selected sections rather than the entire trail.
However, if you are planning a longer journey or your first Lycian Way experience, walking broadly from
west to east — from the Fethiye side towards Antalya — often creates a natural progression from the coastal landscapes of western Lycia towards the more mountainous terrain farther east.
West to East: Fethiye Towards Antalya
The classic western starting point is around
Ovacık, above Ölüdeniz near Fethiye. From here, the route moves through Faralya, Kabak and the landscapes of western Lycia before continuing towards Patara, Kalkan and Kaş.
For many walkers, this provides a good introduction to the Lycian Way. You encounter coastal paths, villages, archaeological landscapes and mountain sections without beginning immediately with some of the higher terrain found farther east.
This does not mean that the western Lycian Way is easy. Individual stages can still include substantial ascent and descent, rough paths, exposed terrain and long walking days.
What Happens as You Continue East?
Beyond Kaş, the character of the journey changes again. The central sections around Aperlai, Üçağız, Kekova, Kaleköy and Demre combine coastal walking with some of the most interesting archaeological landscapes on the route.
Continue farther east and the Lycian Way increasingly meets the mountains. Around Olympos, Çıralı, Beycik and Mount Tahtalı, the relationship between the Mediterranean coast and the Taurus Mountains becomes much more obvious.
The eastern sections can involve higher elevations and more mountainous terrain. For hikers attempting a long continuous journey, reaching these landscapes after already spending time on the trail can make west-to-east progression feel logical.
Can You Walk the Lycian Way from East to West?
Absolutely. There is no rule requiring you to start in Fethiye.
An
east-to-west Lycian Way hike can make sense if your travel arrangements, flights, accommodation or chosen stages work better from the Antalya side. Experienced hikers may also simply prefer to begin with the eastern mountain landscapes and finish beside the western Mediterranean coast.
If you are walking only one section of the Lycian Way, the direction becomes even less important. In that case, transport, accommodation, daily elevation and the logistics at the beginning and end of each stage may matter more than the overall Fethiye-to-Antalya orientation.
Is West to East Easier on the Lycian Way?
Not automatically.
Walking west to east does not turn the Lycian Way into an easy trail. The route constantly changes, and difficulty depends on the individual stages you choose.
Elevation gain and loss, trail surface, temperature, season, water availability, luggage weight and your own walking experience can all influence how demanding a day feels.
It is more useful to think of west-to-east as a
natural progression for many first-time long-distance walkers rather than simply calling it the easier direction.
What If You Are Walking Only Part of the Lycian Way?
You do not need to walk the entire route from Fethiye towards Antalya.
In fact, dividing the Lycian Way into
West, Central and East makes planning much easier. Each section has its own landscape and walking character.
Western Lycian Way – Fethiye to Kaş
The western section combines Ölüdeniz, Faralya, Kabak, Patara and the landscapes leading towards Kaş. It is a good choice if you want a mixture of coastal walking, villages and ancient sites.

Lycian Way West – Fethiye to Kaş programme.
Central Lycian Way – Kaş to Demre & Finike
Central Lycia combines coastal walking and archaeology around Aperlai, Üçağız, Kekova and Demre. Walkers continuing towards Finike also encounter more demanding mountain stages around Alakilise and Belos. You can focus on the Kaş–Demre section or include the mountain stages according to your available time and walking preferences.

Eastern Lycian Way – Karaöz, Tahtalı & Antalya
The eastern Lycian Way has a stronger mountain character. Around Olympos, Çıralı and Mount Tahtalı, walkers move between the Mediterranean coast and the higher landscapes of the Taurus Mountains.

Choose the Direction Around Your Journey
Instead of choosing your walking direction simply because somebody says that one way is easier, look at the journey as a whole.
Consider where you are arriving in Turkey, how many days you have, which landscapes interest you most and how much walking you want to do each day. Accommodation, luggage transfers and transportation at the beginning and end of your chosen section can also influence the best direction.
If you are travelling outside the main walking seasons or heading into higher mountain sections, current trail and weather conditions should also be part of your planning.
