What Is the Efeler Trail?

The Efeler Trail, or Efeler Yolu, is a marked long-distance cultural route of approximately 500 kilometres in western Turkey. Beginning near Bornova in İzmir, it crosses the Nif and Bozdağ mountain landscapes, continues through rural settlements and the Aydın Mountains, and eventually reaches the Ephesus-Selçuk region. The complete route consists of 27 main stages and one alternative stage. It was developed not simply as a hiking trail but as a cultural route connecting mountain landscapes, villages and the traditions associated with the efe and zeybek culture of western Anatolia. You do not need to walk all 500 kilometres to experience it. For travellers interested in Ephesus and Şirince, the final stages are particularly relevant.

Does the Efeler Trail Pass Through Sirince?

Yes. Şirince is directly on the Efeler Trail. Stage 26 connects Küçükkale with Şirince, while Stage 27 continues from Şirince to the House of the Virgin Mary near Ephesus. This makes the village a natural base for combining walking with the wider archaeological landscape around Selçuk. Rather than treating Şirince as a short sightseeing stop, hikers can approach it as part of a much larger cultural landscape.

Sirince – A Village in the Hills Above Ephesus

Şirince lies in the hills above Selçuk, surrounded by vineyards, olive groves and agricultural landscapes. The village is known for its historic houses, narrow streets, local products and fruit wines. For walkers, however, its location is just as important as its architecture. Şirince sits between the rural landscapes of the Efeler Trail and the archaeological world of Ephesus. This makes it possible to combine a village stay with walking rather than simply arriving and leaving by vehicle.

Walking from Sirince Towards Ephesus

The final stage of the Efeler Trail leaves Şirince and continues towards the House of the Virgin Mary in the hills near Ephesus. This creates an interesting transition. You begin in a living village landscape and move through the countryside towards one of the most important archaeological areas of the ancient Mediterranean. The walk also helps explain something that is easy to miss when visiting Ephesus only by vehicle: ancient cities did not exist in isolation. They were connected to agricultural land, hills, water sources, roads, settlements and sacred places throughout the surrounding landscape.

Ancient Ephesus After the Walk

Ephesus was one of the major cities of ancient western Anatolia and later became an important centre of the Roman province of Asia. Today, its archaeological remains include the Library of Celsus, the Great Theatre, Curetes Street, the Terrace Houses, the Temple of Hadrian and extensive civic and religious structures. The wider landscape also includes the remains of the Temple of Artemis, once counted among the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, as well as Ayasuluk Hill and the Basilica of St John. Walking through the surrounding countryside before exploring these sites changes the scale of the experience. Ephesus becomes part of a landscape rather than simply a collection of monuments.

Is Ephesus Sirince Hiking Part of the Full Efeler Trail?

It can be, but it does not have to be. Experienced long-distance walkers may follow the complete Efeler Trail towards Şirince and Ephesus. Other travellers may prefer to walk only selected stages around Şirince and Selçuk. We can also combine these sections with archaeological visits and shorter countryside walks according to your available time and preferred walking level. This flexibility makes the region suitable for travellers who enjoy walking but do not necessarily want a multi-week long-distance trek.
