Şirince & the Landscapes Around Ephesus

Priene, Miletus & Didyma – Ancient Ionia

South of Ephesus, Priene, Miletus and Didyma provide one of the most rewarding archaeological sequences in western Turkey.

Priene reveals a planned ancient city set against the slopes of Mount Mycale. Miletus introduces one of the great cities of ancient Ionia, while Didyma centres on the monumental sanctuary and oracle of Apollo.

Pergamon – From Acropolis to Asklepion

Antandros also has an important place in the later literary tradition of Aeneas. We present this as part of ancient literary and mythological tradition rather than treating the story as documented historical fact.

Troy & the Landscape of the Troad

Troy brings archaeology, literature and the physical landscape together. Exploring the site and museum provides an opportunity to distinguish between the archaeological settlement sequence, the Homeric tradition and the later cultural importance of Troy.

The wider Troad can also be incorporated into the journey through short walks and additional archaeological sites according to the time available.

Gallipoli – A Different Layer of History

After the ancient landscapes of western Anatolia, Gallipoli introduces a much more recent historical layer. The peninsula’s First World War sites provide a striking change in historical period before the journey returns towards Istanbul.

Day 1 – Arrival in Istanbul

Arrival in Istanbul and transfer to your hotel according to the confirmed arrangements. Depending on your flight schedule, the remainder of the day can be used for rest or a short introductory walk.

Istanbul provides a natural starting point before travelling into western Anatolia.

Day 2 – Istanbul: Historic Peninsula, Grand Bazaar & Pera

Today we explore selected layers of Istanbul, beginning in the Historic Peninsula and continuing through different parts of the city. Depending on the final programme, visits may include Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque, Grand Bazaar and Pera.

Day 3 – Denizli, Pamukkale, Hierapolis & Laodikeia

We travel from Istanbul towards Denizli according to the confirmed transport arrangements and begin exploring the archaeological landscape of the Lycus Valley.

The day can include Hierapolis and the travertines of Pamukkale, followed by Laodikeia if timing allows. Rather than treating these places as isolated attractions, we begin looking at the relationship between ancient cities, geography and the routes that connected western Anatolia.

We continue towards the Aphrodisias region for our overnight stay.

Day 4 – Aphrodisias & Transfer to Selçuk

We begin the day at Aphrodisias, allowing sufficient time to explore its monumental architecture, stadium, sculpture and urban landscape.

After the archaeological visit, we continue towards Selçuk. Depending on timing and the final route, we can make selected stops along the way.

After arriving in the Ephesus region, the programme may include Selçuk, the Temple of Artemis or Şirince according to available time and interests.

Day 5 – Ephesus & Walking Through the Ancient Landscape

Today is dedicated to Ephesus, one of the central archaeological sites of the journey. We explore its ancient streets, theatre, civic spaces and monumental remains while considering the city’s development within the wider Aegean landscape.

Depending on daylight, season and preferred walking level, we can combine the archaeological visit with a selected walk in the surrounding landscape.

Day 6 – Şirince & the Hills Around Ephesus

Today we move away from the major archaeological monuments and explore the landscape around Şirince and Ephesus on foot.

The exact route can be selected according to season and walking level. A possible programme can connect Şirince with Çamlık and the wider landscape towards the House of the Virgin Mary.

The aim is to experience how villages, agricultural landscapes, hills and ancient sites fit together rather than spending the entire journey travelling between archaeological entrances by vehicle.

Day 7 – Priene, Miletus & Didyma

We travel south to explore three major sites associated with ancient Ionia.

Priene introduces a remarkably clear ancient urban plan against the slopes of Mount Mycale. We then continue to Miletus, one of the major cities of the ancient Aegean, before visiting the monumental sanctuary of Apollo at Didyma.

The day’s programme can be adjusted according to how much time you prefer to spend at each archaeological site.

Day 8 – Pergamon & Bergama

We travel north towards Bergama and explore the archaeological landscape of Pergamon.

The programme can include the Acropolis and Asklepion, with walking incorporated where appropriate. Exploring the topography on foot helps reveal the scale of the ancient city and its relationship with the modern town below.

The evening also provides an opportunity to experience Bergama’s local food and contemporary town life.

Day 9 – Antandros, Assos & the Northern Aegean

We continue north through the landscapes of the northern Aegean. Depending on the final itinerary, we can visit Antandros and continue towards Assos.

Antandros appears in the literary tradition surrounding Aeneas and his journey after the Trojan War. We discuss this within its archaeological and literary context rather than presenting the later tradition as established historical fact.

A selected walk can be included around Assos or elsewhere in the Troad according to time, conditions and participant interests.

Overnight in or around Assos.

Day 10 – Troy, Troy Museum & Gallipoli

We begin with Troy and the Troy Museum, exploring both the archaeological settlement sequence and the literary traditions that made the site one of the best-known ancient landscapes in the world.

Later, we continue towards the Gallipoli Peninsula. This brings the journey into a very different historical period through sites associated with the First World War.

If your main interest is ancient archaeology, the Gallipoli section can be removed and the additional time used elsewhere in western Anatolia.

Overnight in the Gallipoli area.

Day 11 – Return to Istanbul

We return towards Istanbul according to your onward travel arrangements.

If your international departure allows, additional nights can be added in Istanbul. Alternatively, the journey can be connected with another region of Turkey.

Shorter & Longer Versions of the Western Turkey Archaeology Tour

You do not need 11 days to travel with us. A shorter programme can concentrate on Pamukkale, Aphrodisias, Ephesus, Priene, Miletus and Didyma. With more time, the journey can continue north through Pergamon, Assos and Troy.

Comfortable walking footwear is important, particularly for archaeological sites with uneven stone surfaces and for itineraries that include countryside walks.
