Türkiye lies at the meeting point of different landscapes, climatic zones and major bird migration routes. Within a single journey, birdwatchers can move between wetlands, open steppes, forests, coastal habitats and mountain environments, each supporting very different bird communities.

Our Turkey birdwatching tours are designed as private and tailor-made journeys for travellers who want to explore this diversity with specialist guidance while leaving the transport, accommodation and travel logistics to us.

This is not a conventional sightseeing tour with occasional birdwatching stops. Birding is the reason for the journey. Where we travel, how long we stay and how each day develops are considered around the season, habitats, bird movements and the interests of the participants.

No Fixed Itinerary — We Follow the Season

There is no single birdwatching itinerary that works equally well throughout the year in Türkiye.

Migration periods, breeding activity, water levels, weather, altitude and local habitat conditions influence where birds are present and where observation may be most rewarding. For this reason, we do not begin with a fixed route and try to fit birdwatching into it.

We begin with your travel dates and birding interests, then design the journey around them.

Your programme may concentrate on one region or connect several different habitats across Anatolia. The number of days, daily distances and observation areas are discussed before the journey according to your available time and priorities.

From Anatolian Wetlands to Steppes and Mountains

One of the great strengths of birdwatching in Türkiye is the diversity of habitats that can be experienced within one country.

Wetlands and Lakes

Wetlands, lakes and coastal ecosystems provide important feeding, breeding and resting habitats for resident and migratory birds. Depending on the season and location, these environments can offer opportunities to observe waterbirds, waders, flamingos, pelicans and many other species associated with aquatic habitats.

Steppes and Open Landscapes

The open landscapes of Anatolia provide a completely different birding environment. Steppe, dry agricultural areas and broad plains support specialist species that are easily missed on conventional travel itineraries.

Observation in these landscapes is often about understanding habitat as much as searching for an individual bird.

Mountains and Highlands

Best Seasons for Birdwatching in Türkiye

Türkiye offers birdwatching opportunities throughout the year, but spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November) are particularly important because of seasonal migration across Anatolia.

Spring | March–May

Spring brings major movement through wetlands, lakes, coastal habitats and open landscapes. Migrating waterbirds, raptors, storks, bee-eaters, pelicans and numerous passerines can all become part of the seasonal birding picture.

April and May are particularly interesting months for combining migration with the increasing activity of breeding birds and can also provide excellent opportunities for bird and wildlife photography.

Autumn | September–November

Autumn brings another major period of movement as many birds travel south towards Africa and the Mediterranean.

Storks, cranes, raptors, waterbirds and passerines may form part of this migration period, with September and October particularly relevant when designing migration-focused birdwatching programmes.

Winter | December–February

Winter should not be overlooked. Wetlands, lakes and coastal ecosystems can become important areas for wintering waterbirds, including ducks, geese, flamingos and other species using Türkiye during the colder months.

A winter journey can therefore be designed very differently from a spring or autumn migration programme.

Summer | June–August

Summer is generally quieter in terms of large-scale migration, but it can be valuable for observing breeding birds and exploring steppe, mountain and highland habitats.

For birders interested in particular breeding species or higher-altitude environments, summer may therefore form part of a more specialised programme.

Birding Comes First

A productive birdwatching day does not always follow a conventional sightseeing timetable.

An early departure may be worthwhile. A productive observation point may justify staying longer than expected. Another location may require less time. Weather or recent field conditions may also make a different habitat more appropriate.

This flexibility is an important part of the programme rather than a departure from it.

We travel at the pace of birdwatching, not at the pace of a conventional sightseeing tour.

Birds are wild animals and individual sightings can never be guaranteed. A target list helps us design the programme; it is not a checklist of guaranteed observations.

Birdwatching and Photography

Birdwatchers and bird photographers often share the same habitats, but their priorities in the field can be different.

If photography is an important part of your journey, please tell us when making your enquiry. Where practical, the programme can take into consideration the additional observation time and field conditions required for photography.

Wildlife and habitat always come first. Observation and photography must respect sensitive species, breeding areas, protected habitats and local regulations.

Our birdwatching programmes are entirely private and tailor-made. There are no fixed departure dates or standard itineraries.

Each journey is designed around seasonal bird movements, target species, habitats, photography interests, available time and the preferences of the participants.

Private travel also gives us greater freedom to organise transport, accommodation and daily timing around birdwatching rather than forcing birdwatching into the timetable of a conventional tour.

These journeys can suit experienced birders, bird photographers, naturalists and travellers who simply want to explore Türkiye’s birdlife in greater depth.

What matters is that birds and natural landscapes are an important reason for your journey.

Experienced birders may want to concentrate on particular species or habitats. Other travellers may prefer a broader journey combining birdwatching with landscapes, regional culture and local food. Both approaches can be considered when designing the programme.

Transport and accommodation are organised around the practical requirements of the birdwatching programme.

Where possible, we aim to reduce unnecessary travel and position the group appropriately for the following day’s field observations. Some journeys may involve simple accommodation in areas where location is more important than hotel category, while other sections may offer a wider choice.

Turkey’s geographical position and varied landscapes make it possible to experience very different bird habitats within a single country.

Coastal and inland wetlands, open agricultural areas, Anatolian steppes, forests, river systems and mountain environments each support different bird communities. Seasonal migration adds another dimension to this diversity.

Why Does the Season Matter?

Birdlife changes throughout the year. Migration periods, breeding activity, water conditions, altitude and local weather can all affect where birds are present and how they can be observed.

For this reason, the same itinerary should not automatically be treated in exactly the same way throughout the year.

Habitats Matter as Much as Destinations

Migration

Turkey occupies an important geographical position between Europe, Asia and Africa. Seasonal movements can therefore become a significant part of a birdwatching journey.

Migration is a natural process, however, and bird movements cannot be guaranteed for a particular day or observation point.

Can We Target Particular Species?

Yes. If there are particular species or bird families you hope to observe, send us your target list before the programme is confirmed.

This allows us to consider whether your travel dates, regions and proposed itinerary are appropriate. However, birds are wild animals and sightings can never be guaranteed.

Birdwatching or Bird Photography?

Birdwatching and bird photography overlap, but photographers may require additional time, different positioning or different priorities in the field.

Please tell us in advance if photography is one of the main purposes of your journey so that it can be considered when designing the programme.

How Difficult Is the Journey?

This is primarily a birdwatching and nature observation programme rather than a trekking expedition.

However, reaching observation locations may involve walking on natural surfaces, standing for extended periods, early starts, changes in altitude or time outdoors in variable weather.

The exact physical requirements depend on the final route and will be discussed before confirmation.

Why Keep the Programme Flexible?

Birdwatching depends on living ecosystems rather than fixed monuments.

Weather, migration, water levels, habitat conditions, road access and recent observations may influence how time is best used. A degree of flexibility therefore improves the quality of the journey.

Wild Birds & Sightings

Birds are wild animals and sightings cannot be guaranteed.

Season, migration, weather, habitat conditions and many other natural factors influence bird presence and behaviour. References to particular species indicate potential birding interests rather than guaranteed sightings.

Target Species

If you have a target species list, please send it to us before the journey is confirmed. We can consider your priorities when preparing the itinerary and discuss whether your proposed dates and regions are appropriate.

Responsible Birdwatching

Observation must always respect wildlife and habitat.

Birds should not be deliberately disturbed for closer views or photographs. Particular care is required around nests, breeding areas, roosts and sensitive species. Instructions from the specialist guide and local authorities must be followed.

Photography

Please tell us in advance if bird or wildlife photography is a major purpose of your journey.

Access to particular areas and professional photography or filming may be subject to local regulations or permits. Photography must never take priority over the welfare of wildlife or applicable conservation rules.

Changes in the Field

Birdwatching conditions can change quickly. Weather, water levels, recent bird movements, road access or other field information may make an alternative observation area more appropriate.

Where practical, the guide and organiser may adjust the timing or order of field visits while maintaining the overall character of the confirmed journey.

Early Starts & Daily Timing

Some birding days may begin early because observation conditions and bird activity can be better at particular times of day.

Exact departure times will be discussed during the journey according to the route, season and field conditions.

Walking & Field Conditions

This is not primarily a trekking programme, but birdwatching may involve walking on tracks, uneven natural surfaces, wet ground, open steppe or mountain terrain.

Please inform us before booking of any mobility limitations that may affect access to observation areas.

Clothing & Equipment

A detailed equipment list will be provided according to the season and final itinerary.

Participants should normally be prepared for outdoor observation and changing weather conditions. Bring your own binoculars, camera equipment and other personal optical equipment unless your confirmed programme specifically states otherwise.

Health & Personal Responsibility

Participants are responsible for considering whether the programme is appropriate for their personal health and mobility.

Please inform us before travel of any relevant medical condition, allergy, medication or mobility requirement that may affect the organisation of the journey.

Protected Areas & Access

Wetlands, national parks, wildlife areas and other protected environments may be subject to seasonal restrictions, conservation measures, permits or temporary access limitations.

Local regulations and instructions from the relevant authorities must always be respected.

Accommodation & Meals

Accommodation and meal arrangements depend on the final route. Specific hotels, pensions and included meals will be stated in your confirmed proposal.

Arrival, Departure & Transfers

Please provide your confirmed arrival and departure details in advance. Airport, hotel and field transfers included in the programme will be specified in your final proposal.

Additional transfers requested outside the confirmed itinerary may be arranged where practical and may involve an additional charge.
