This private journey begins and ends in Trabzon. It focuses on three contrasting landscapes: Krom Valley, the high mountains and lakes of Artabel, and historic Gümüşhane.

Rather than treating the region as a collection of sightseeing stops, we explore it on foot. Walking helps us understand how settlements developed in the valleys and how people moved between the mountains and the Black Sea. It also helps explain why mining became such an important part of Gümüşhane’s history.

Beyond the Familiar Black Sea Routes

Most journeys through Turkey’s Eastern Black Sea region remain close to Trabzon, Rize and the better-known mountain plateaus. Gümüşhane lies inland, where the geography begins to change.

The landscape becomes higher and more open. Historic mining valleys, abandoned settlements, churches, mountain pastures and old communication routes create a region where natural and cultural history meet.

We do not approach this as a conventional sightseeing tour. It is a private walking journey for travellers who want to spend time in the landscape and understand what they are seeing.

More Than a Walking Journey

Walking is an important part of this journey, but it is not the only reason we travel through Gümüşhane.

We also make time for the people, food and everyday life of the region. Depending on the route and opportunities during your visit, we may stop in local settlements and meet people who live in the region. We can also enjoy local dishes and make food part of the journey rather than simply something between two walks.

These encounters are not staged performances or fixed tourist attractions. They depend on where we are, who we meet and what is possible on the day.

A village stop, a local table or an unexpected conversation can sometimes explain the region as clearly as a historic building or mountain path.

For us, Gümüşhane is therefore not only a landscape to hike through. We want to understand something of the landscape, history, food and people together.

Day 1 — Trabzon to Krom Valley and Gümüşhane

We leave Trabzon and travel inland towards Gümüşhane. Along the way, we enter the mountain landscape that historically connected the Black Sea coast with the interior.

Our main focus is Krom Valley, one of the most unusual cultural landscapes in the region. Mining, mountain agriculture and settlement developed here over centuries. They left stone houses, churches, chapels, paths and other structures across the valley.

Instead of trying to see every ruin, we explore selected parts of the valley on foot. This allows us to read the relationship between settlement, terrain and historic structures.

After the walk, we continue to Gümüşhane for our overnight stay.

Day 2 — Hiking in the Artabel Mountains

The second day takes us from the cultural landscape into the high mountains.

Artabel has high-altitude terrain, mountain lakes, rocky slopes and open alpine landscapes. We select the walking plan according to the season, weather, trail conditions and the experience of the group.

We do not promise a fixed route regardless of conditions. Mountain weather can change quickly, and access varies during the season. We therefore choose the day’s walk according to the conditions we actually find.

This gives us a very different perspective on Gümüşhane after the historic landscape of Krom.

Day 3 — Historic Gümüşhane, Canca and Return to Trabzon

Our final day looks at Gümüşhane itself and the landscape surrounding the town.

Mining played an important role in the development of the region for centuries. Ottoman sources describe Gümüşhane as an important mining centre, particularly during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries.

The day’s programme depends on our available time, local conditions and the itinerary we have agreed. It can include walking around the historic landscape associated with Gümüşhane and Canca. We then continue towards Zigana and return to Trabzon.

The journey back towards the Black Sea completes the geographical story of the programme. We travel from the coast into the mining valleys and high mountains of the interior, then return across the same natural corridor.

Walking Through a Mining Landscape

Gümüşhane cannot be understood only through its mountains.

Mining shaped settlement, trade and population movements across the region. Historical research records more than one hundred old mining sites within Gümüşhane Province. Many were active during the Ottoman period.

Krom Valley is one of the clearest places to see how this economic history became part of the physical landscape.
