Description
A Journey Through Landscapes and Civilisations
Turkey changes quickly when you travel through it slowly. This eleven-day journey begins among the monuments, neighbourhoods and everyday life of Istanbul before continuing into a very different world in Central Anatolia.
In Cappadocia, walking becomes the way we explore a landscape shaped by volcanic geology and centuries of human settlement. From there, we leave the valleys behind and continue towards the limestone mountains of the Aladağlar, where the journey changes again — from cultural landscapes to a genuine mountain environment.
But the mountains are not the end of the story.
From the Aladağlar we continue south towards Tarsus and ancient Cilicia, adding another layer of Anatolian and Mediterranean history to the journey.
This is not simply a walking tour with sightseeing added between hikes. Walking, history, landscape, food and the people who live within these regions are all part of the same journey.
Four Regions, Four Different Perspectives
The route has been designed around contrast rather than repetition. Istanbul introduces the historical depth and contemporary life of Turkey. Cappadocia combines volcanic landscapes with settlements shaped by centuries of human presence. The Aladağlar change the scale completely, bringing us into a mountain environment. Tarsus then takes the journey south, beyond the Taurus Mountains and towards ancient Cilicia.
We travel between the regions by a combination of domestic flight and organised road transfers, while exploring selected areas on foot.
Part I — Istanbul: The Journey Begins Between Continents
Day 1 — Arrival in Istanbul
Arrival in Istanbul and transfer to your accommodation. Rather than beginning with a fixed sightseeing schedule immediately after your flight, the first day is kept flexible according to your arrival time.
If timing allows, we can take a short introductory walk before dinner. Otherwise, the day provides time to settle in and prepare for the journey ahead.
Day 2 — Historic Istanbul, Grand Bazaar and Pera
Our first full day introduces Istanbul through different historical and urban layers. We begin around the Historic Peninsula, with sites such as Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque forming part of the historical context of the day.
From there, the programme continues through the city rather than treating Istanbul as a checklist of monuments. Food, streets, neighbourhoods and the Grand Bazaar all contribute to understanding the city.
Later in the day we continue towards Pera, adding another period and another character of Istanbul before leaving for Central Anatolia the following morning.
Part II — Cappadocia: Walking Through a Human and Volcanic Landscape
Day 3 — Istanbul to Cappadocia & First Walk
We transfer to the airport for our flight to the Cappadocia region. After arrival and the necessary transfer, we begin exploring the landscape on foot.
A walk through the Pigeon Valley area provides our first introduction to Cappadocia’s volcanic terrain and the relationship between natural formations and human settlement. Depending on timing and logistics, the day can also include time around Göreme before continuing to our accommodation.
The aim of the first Cappadocia day is not to see everything immediately but to begin understanding the landscape we will explore over the following days.
Day 4 — Ihlara Valley, Selime and Underground Cappadocia
Today combines walking with archaeology and settlement history. We explore part of the Ihlara Valley on foot, following the canyon landscape associated with the Melendiz River and the rock-cut structures found along the valley.
After the walk, the programme continues to Selime before visiting one of Cappadocia’s underground settlements. Rather than treating these as isolated attractions, the day helps us look at different ways people adapted to Cappadocia’s geology over time — above ground, within cliffs and beneath the surface.
Day 5 — Ortahisar & Gomeda Valley
An optional hot-air balloon flight can be arranged in the early morning, subject to availability and operating conditions.
After breakfast, our walking programme continues around Ortahisar and the Gomeda Valley area. This part of Cappadocia offers another combination of paths, rock-cut spaces and rural landscape, allowing us to move away from the busiest sightseeing circuits.
Walking distances and the exact route can be adapted according to the group and local conditions. Food and local stops can be incorporated naturally into the day rather than following a rigid sightseeing timetable.
Day 6 — Üzengi, Local Food & Göreme
Our final full Cappadocia day continues on foot through another part of the region. The programme may include the Üzengi area and surrounding village landscapes, combined with an opportunity to experience regional home cooking or local food.
Later we visit Göreme Open Air Museum, bringing together many of the historical themes we have encountered while walking through the region.
If you are interested in Cappadocia but do not have time for the complete eleven-day journey, our Private Cappadocia Hiking Tour offers shorter private walking experiences adapted to your available time and interests.
Part III — Aladağlar: From the Valleys to the Mountains
Day 7 — Cappadocia to the Aladağlar
Today the geography changes significantly. We leave Cappadocia and travel towards the Aladağlar, part of the Taurus mountain system.
Depending on the final programme, timing and previous visits, an underground city or another appropriate stop can be incorporated into the journey south.
On arrival in the Aladağlar, we settle into local accommodation. If daylight, weather and timing allow, we may take a short introductory walk. The emphasis is deliberately different from Cappadocia: we are now entering a mountain environment rather than another sightseeing region.
Days 8–9 — Walking in the Aladağlar
These two days are dedicated to the Aladağlar. Our standard programme uses local accommodation as a base for day walks, so camping is not required.
The mountains offer a range of possibilities, and we do not specify the same route for every group months in advance. Daily walks are selected according to walking experience, interests, weather, seasonal conditions and the state of the trails.
This flexibility allows us to experience the Aladağlar as a real mountain landscape without automatically turning the journey into a summit or camping expedition.
For experienced walkers who want a more mountain-focused holiday, our separate Cappadocia & Aladağlar Walking Tour concentrates on these two regions over a flexible 7, 8 or 9 day programme.
Part IV — Beyond the Taurus: Tarsus and Ancient Cilicia
Day 10 — From the Aladağlar to Tarsus
The mountains are not simply our final walking destination. Today we cross from the Aladağlar towards Tarsus, making the geographical transition from the Taurus Mountains towards the Mediterranean and the historical region of Cilicia.
Tarsus has a history extending far beyond a single period or personality. Its position, connections and long urban history make it a natural final chapter for a journey that has already crossed several very different cultural landscapes.
Our programme can include the Tarsus Museum, the Church of St. Paul and Cleopatra’s Gate, depending on opening conditions and the final itinerary.
Food also becomes part of understanding the region. Dinner provides an opportunity to discover some of the local flavours associated with Tarsus and southern Turkey rather than ending the journey with a generic hotel meal.
Day 11 — Departure via Adana
After breakfast, we arrange the transfer towards Adana Airport according to your onward flight arrangements.
Depending on departure time, there may be an opportunity for an additional stop or meal before the airport. Travellers continuing elsewhere in Turkey can also discuss alternative arrangements with us in advance.
Walking Is Part of the Journey — Not the Whole Story
This programme is suitable for travellers who enjoy being active but do not want every day measured only in kilometres and elevation gain.
Some days contain more walking; others concentrate more heavily on archaeology, cities, food or travelling between regions. This variation is intentional.
The walking programme can be adjusted according to the group’s experience and interests, particularly in Cappadocia and the Aladağlar. You do not need mountaineering experience for the standard programme, although participants should be comfortable spending several hours outdoors and walking on natural terrain.
Private, Flexible and Tailored
The eleven-day programme provides the framework for the journey, but it does not have to operate as a rigid package.
Accommodation choices, walking distances, additional nights and some daily activities can be discussed according to your travel dates, interests and preferred pace. The final confirmed itinerary will clearly state the services, accommodation and arrangements included in your journey.
If your priority is walking rather than the broader cultural journey, the 7–9 Day Cappadocia & Aladağlar Walking Tour may be the better choice.
Accommodation, Meals and Travel Logistics
We prefer locally based accommodation appropriate to each region rather than making camping a requirement for the standard programme.
Guiding, scheduled transfers, accommodation and planned meals can be organised as part of the journey. The exact inclusions are confirmed in your individual proposal so that you know what has been arranged before travelling.
Dietary requirements should be communicated in advance so that we can discuss the available options with the accommodations and restaurants used during the programme.
Want to Continue Walking in Turkey?
For travellers with more time, this journey can form part of a wider walking holiday in Turkey. If you are interested in continuing towards the Mediterranean coast, ask us about combining your journey with selected sections of the Lycian Way.
We recommend discussing extensions before booking so that transfers, flights and the overall direction of the journey can be planned efficiently.
FAQ – Frequently Asked Questions
Is this mainly a walking tour or a cultural tour?
It is a combination of both. Walking is an important part of the journey, particularly in Cappadocia and the Aladağlar, but the programme is not designed around hiking every day. Istanbul, archaeological sites, local food, villages and Tarsus are equally important parts of the experience.
How much walking should we expect?
The amount of walking varies from day to day. Some days are primarily walking days, while others combine shorter walks with cultural visits or transfers. In Cappadocia and especially in the Aladağlar, daily routes can be selected according to your walking experience, interests and local conditions.
Do we need mountaineering experience for the Aladağlar?
No mountaineering experience is required for the standard programme. We use local accommodation as a base and select appropriate day walks according to the group’s experience and fitness. The Aladağlar are a genuine mountain environment, however, so weather, terrain and seasonal conditions always influence the choice of route.
Do we have to camp in the Aladağlar?
No. The standard journey is based on local accommodation and day walks, so camping is not required. For experienced walkers who would like a more mountain-focused experience, camping or higher routes can be discussed separately when conditions and the group’s experience make them appropriate.
Is the 11-day itinerary fixed?
No. The itinerary provides the framework for the journey and can be tailored to your travel dates, interests and preferred pace. The balance between walking, cultural visits and free time can be adjusted, and additional nights can be discussed when planning your journey.
Where does the journey start and finish?
The standard programme begins in Istanbul and finishes with a transfer to Adana Airport after Tarsus. Your exact arrival and departure arrangements will be planned according to your flights and wider Turkey itinerary.
Is the hot-air balloon flight included?
A hot-air balloon flight in Cappadocia can be arranged as an optional experience. Flights depend on availability, weather and operating conditions and should not be considered a guaranteed part of the standard programme unless specifically included in your confirmed proposal.
What type of accommodation do you use?
We prefer accommodation that fits the character and logistics of each region. The exact properties depend on availability, group requirements and the final itinerary. In the Aladağlar, our standard approach is accommodation-based rather than requiring overnight camping.
Are meals included?
The meals included depend on the final programme and will be clearly stated in your confirmed proposal. We also try to make food part of the journey itself, with opportunities to experience regional cooking and local dishes rather than treating every meal simply as an included service.
Can vegetarian or other dietary requirements be accommodated?
Dietary requirements should be shared with us before the journey. We will discuss them with the accommodations and restaurants used during the programme and explain what can reasonably be arranged in each region.
Can we book a private departure?
Yes. This journey is designed as a private and tailor-made experience. Dates, programme details and services can be planned around your group rather than requiring you to join a fixed large-group departure.
What if we only want Cappadocia and the Aladağlar?
If walking is your main priority and you do not need the Istanbul and Tarsus sections, our Cappadocia & Aladağlar Walking Tour offers a more walking-focused 7, 8 or 9 day journey between these two landscapes.
Can we book only a private walk in Cappadocia?
Yes. Travellers already staying in Cappadocia can choose our Private Cappadocia Hiking Tour for a shorter private walking or a Self-Guided Cappadocia Hiking experience adapted to their available time and interests.
Can the journey be extended?
Yes. Extra nights or other regions can be discussed as part of a tailor-made itinerary. Rather than automatically adding destinations, we prefer to look at your available time and interests first and then suggest an extension that fits naturally with the journey.
What information should we send when making an enquiry?
It is helpful to tell us your preferred travel dates, number of travellers, available number of days and usual walking experience. You do not need to have every detail decided before contacting us. We can use this information as the starting point for your itinerary.

Guidelines & Notes
A Flexible Programme
The itinerary shown on this page is a framework for the journey rather than a rigid schedule. Walking routes, visits and the order of some activities may change according to weather, trail conditions, opening hours, local circumstances and operational requirements.
Your final confirmed itinerary and proposal will specify the services, accommodation and arrangements included in your journey.
Walking Experience & Participation
This journey combines cultural visits with walking on natural trails and uneven terrain. Participants should be comfortable spending time outdoors and walking for several hours on appropriate days.
Walking distances and routes can be adapted to the group’s experience and interests, but the nature of the terrain and local conditions must also be taken into consideration. Please tell us about your usual walking experience when making an enquiry.
Walking in the Aladağlar
The Aladağlar are a genuine mountain environment. Routes are selected according to the group’s walking experience as well as weather, season, trail conditions and other local factors.
Our standard programme is based on day walks with local accommodation rather than overnight camping. More demanding or camping-based mountain programmes require separate planning and may involve different equipment and logistics.
Weather, Trail Conditions & Route Changes
Outdoor programmes are always affected by local conditions. The guide or organiser may change, shorten or replace a walking route when necessary for safety, weather, trail access or operational reasons.
A route shown in a sample itinerary should therefore not be interpreted as a guarantee that exactly the same trail will be walked regardless of conditions.
Health & Personal Responsibility
Participants are responsible for considering whether the programme is appropriate for their general health and physical condition. If you have a medical condition, allergy, injury or use medication that may be relevant during walking or travel, please inform us before the journey.
If you are uncertain about your ability to participate in an active travel programme, you should seek appropriate medical advice before travelling.
Clothing & Equipment
Comfortable walking shoes with suitable grip are essential. We also recommend clothing that can be layered, sun protection, a small daypack and a reusable water bottle.
Mountain weather can differ considerably from conditions in Cappadocia, Istanbul or Tarsus. A detailed equipment recommendation can be provided according to the season and final walking programme.
Accommodation & Local Services
We use accommodation appropriate to the character and logistics of each part of the journey. Specific properties depend on availability and the final programme.
Services in smaller towns and mountain areas may naturally differ from those available in Istanbul or major tourism centres. We consider this part of travelling through different regions of Turkey rather than expecting every destination to provide an identical experience.
Meals & Dietary Requirements
Meals included in your journey will be specified in the confirmed proposal. Dietary requirements and food allergies should be communicated before travelling so that available options can be discussed with local providers.
Arrival, Departure & Transfers
The standard journey begins in Istanbul and finishes with a transfer towards Adana Airport. Exact airport transfers and domestic travel arrangements depend on your international and domestic flight schedule.
Additional transfers or itinerary changes can be discussed in advance. During walking sections, vehicle access is naturally limited to suitable roads and accessible meeting points.
Optional Activities
Activities such as hot-air balloon flights are subject to availability, weather and the operating conditions of the relevant provider. An optional activity is not considered included unless it is specifically listed in your confirmed proposal.
Booking, Deposits & Cancellation
Payment schedules, deposits, cancellation conditions and refund terms will be stated in the booking conditions applicable to your confirmed journey. Please review these conditions before making payment.
Final Itinerary
The programme published on this page describes the character and general structure of the journey. Your final confirmed itinerary and proposal will take precedence regarding dates, accommodation, transfers, meals, guiding and other included services.
Professional Organisation & Guiding
Programmes are organised by Globe Outdoors Travel, TÜRSAB A-17542. Guided programmes are accompanied by appropriately licensed professional guides according to the requirements of the itinerary.
We take the organisation of our journeys seriously and expect participants to approach the programme with the same respect for safety, local conditions, the environment and the other members of the group.
