Description

From Ankara to Cappadocia: Discover the Hittite Heartland

Our Ankara to Cappadocia via Hattusa tour is a seven-day private journey combining archaeology, countryside walking, nature and cultural discovery across Central Anatolia.

Begin in Ankara with the Museum of Anatolian Civilizations before exploring the ancient Hittite capital of Hattusa, the remarkable rock sanctuary of Yazılıkaya and the archaeological site of Alacahöyük. Continue through the historic landscapes of Şapinuva and İncesu Canyon before reaching the extraordinary valleys of Cappadocia.

Rather than following a conventional sightseeing circuit, we connect ancient history with the landscapes, local traditions and everyday life of Central Anatolia. As a result, this journey offers a deeper understanding of the region beyond its famous monuments.

Why Choose This Private Hittite Archaeology & Walking Tour?

Explore the Hittite World in Context

Our journey begins at Ankara’s Museum of Anatolian Civilizations, where archaeological collections introduce the cultures that shaped Anatolia over thousands of years.

We then explore Hattusa, the former capital of the Hittite Empire and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its monumental gates, fortifications and temple remains reveal the scale and importance of this ancient centre.

Nearby, the rock sanctuary of Yazılıkaya provides a fascinating introduction to Hittite religious traditions. Meanwhile, Alacahöyük reveals earlier Hattian cultural traditions alongside later Hittite occupation.

In addition, Şapinuva offers another perspective on the political and administrative world of the Hittites. Together, these sites allow us to explore the history of Central Anatolia through connected archaeological landscapes.

Discover Archaeology Through Walking

Walking is an important part of how we experience the region. Instead of moving only between archaeological monuments by vehicle, we also take time to discover the landscapes surrounding them.

Depending on seasonal conditions and local access, selected countryside walks may be included around the Hittite heartland and the wider Budaközü landscape.

We also explore the natural setting of İncesu Canyon, where walking offers a different perspective on the geography of the region.

Finally, Cappadocia introduces another remarkable environment, with volcanic valleys, rock-cut architecture and historic settlements.

All walking activities are adapted to your interests, experience and preferred level of activity.

Experience Central Anatolia Beyond the Monuments

Archaeology is only one part of this journey. Along the way, we also explore the changing landscapes, regional food traditions and everyday culture of Central Anatolia.

Where suitable arrangements are available, we can include local culinary experiences and opportunities to learn more about rural life.

Moreover, travelling privately allows us to spend more time at places that interest you, whether that means archaeological interpretation, landscape photography or a relaxed walk through the countryside.

Continue from the Hittite Heartland to Cappadocia

The journey concludes in Cappadocia, one of Türkiye’s most distinctive cultural landscapes.

Here, volcanic formations, historic villages, rock-cut churches and traditional ways of life create a fascinating contrast with the Bronze Age sites explored earlier in the journey.

Instead of treating Cappadocia as a brief sightseeing stop, we include time for selected valley walks and cultural discovery.

Therefore, the experience connects two different chapters of Anatolian history through the landscapes in which people lived.

Who Is This Journey For?

This private journey is ideal for travellers interested in archaeology, ancient civilisations, cultural heritage, nature and countryside walking.

It is particularly suitable for couples, friends and small private groups who prefer meaningful exploration to large coach tours.

Although walking forms an important part of the experience, this is not a demanding long-distance trekking holiday. Instead, we tailor the balance between archaeological visits, outdoor activities and leisure to your preferences.

Practical Information – Ankara, Hattusa & Cappadocia

Tour Style & Group Size

This seven-day journey is designed as a private, tailor-made experience for couples, families and small groups. We combine professional archaeological guiding, countryside walking, cultural visits and regional experiences.

As every journey is privately arranged, we adapt the itinerary, pace and services to your group rather than operating a fixed departure schedule.

Walking Level & Terrain

The tour involves easy to moderate walking, depending on the final programme. Archaeological sites may include uneven stone surfaces, slopes, steps and exposed areas. Meanwhile, countryside and Cappadocia valley walks may involve rocky paths, loose gravel and occasionally steep sections.

You should feel comfortable walking on uneven ground and spending several hours outdoors with breaks. However, we can shorten or adjust selected walks according to your experience and preferences.

Final walking distances and routes will be confirmed after reviewing local access, weather and the group’s abilities.

Best Time to Travel & Climate

Spring and autumn are generally attractive seasons for combining archaeology with walking in Central Anatolia. April to June and September to October often provide suitable opportunities, although conditions vary considerably from year to year.

The region has a continental climate, with warm to hot summers and cold winters. Spring may bring rain, wind and chilly mornings, while autumn can bring cool evenings and occasional early frost.

In July and August, strong sunshine and afternoon heat may make exposed archaeological sites and valley walks less comfortable. Therefore, we may adjust walking times or reduce outdoor activity during the hottest hours.

Winter travel is possible only with suitable planning. Snow, ice and freezing temperatures may affect walking routes, road access and site visits.

Because Ankara, Çorum and Cappadocia differ in elevation and local conditions, we recommend preparing for changing temperatures throughout the journey.

What to Pack

  • Comfortable walking shoes or lightweight hiking boots with reliable grip.
  • Breathable clothing and layers for changing temperatures.
  • A warm fleece or jacket for cool mornings and evenings.
  • A waterproof and wind-resistant outer layer.
  • A sun hat, sunglasses and sunscreen.
  • A small daypack and reusable water bottle.
  • Personal medication and any essential travel items.
  • Walking poles, if you normally use them on uneven terrain.

In colder months, additional thermal clothing, gloves and suitable footwear may be necessary.

Accommodation & Meals

The proposed itinerary includes overnight stays in Ankara, the Çorum region and Cappadocia. We select suitable accommodation according to your preferences, availability and the final route.

Where practical, we favour smaller, characterful properties that complement the cultural nature of the journey. However, specific hotels and room categories will be confirmed before booking.

We also introduce regional food traditions along the way. Dietary requirements should be communicated in advance so that suitable arrangements can be discussed.

Transport & Travel Arrangements

The proposed journey begins in Ankara and finishes in Cappadocia. We organise road transfers according to the confirmed itinerary, group size and luggage requirements.

Some days involve substantial travel between archaeological sites and regions. Therefore, we balance driving with meaningful visits, rest stops and suitable walking opportunities.

Arrival and departure transfers can be arranged according to your travel plans. All transport arrangements and included services will be clearly specified in your quotation.

Archaeological Sites & Entrance Fees

The itinerary includes important archaeological and cultural sites such as Hattusa, Yazılıkaya, Alacahöyük and Şapinuva, together with the Museum of Anatolian Civilizations in Ankara.

Site opening hours, excavation activities, restoration work and visitor access may change. As a result, we may adjust the order or content of visits when necessary.

Entrance fees, museum tickets and any special arrangements will be listed clearly as included or excluded in your personalised proposal.

Seasonal Access & Itinerary Flexibility

Outdoor activities depend on weather, trail conditions and local access. In particular, the proposed walking experiences around the Hittite heartland, İncesu Canyon and Cappadocia require appropriate conditions.

If a planned walk is unsuitable, we may offer a shorter route, an alternative cultural visit or a different outdoor experience.
We always prioritise safety, archaeological site regulations and the overall quality of the journey.
