Description
Four days through the landscapes of the Hittites — combining Hattusa, Yazılıkaya, Alacahöyük and Şapinuva with walking and the historic landscape of Amasya.
Many visitors reach Hattusa by vehicle, explore the archaeological site and leave the region again the same day.
We take a different approach.
This four-day private journey explores the Hittite heartland through archaeology, walking and landscape.
Beginning in historic Amasya, we explore the Yeşilırmak Valley before continuing towards Çorum and the lands associated with the Hittite Empire.
Hattusa remains the archaeological centre of the journey, together with the rock sanctuary of Yazılıkaya and Alacahöyük. But we also make time for the landscape around these places.
The journey continues towards Şapinuva and İncesu Canyon, bringing archaeology and natural landscape together once again.
This is not simply a longer Hattusa sightseeing tour. It is a journey through the landscape of the Hittites.
4-Day Hittite Walking & Archaeology Journey
Day 1 — Amasya & the Yeşilırmak Landscape
Our journey begins in Amasya, where mountains rise directly above the Yeşilırmak River and many layers of history remain visible within the modern city.
We explore the historical landscape on foot, combining the old town and river valley with a selected walk above the city.
Depending on the final programme and local conditions, the walking day can include the Öbektepe landscape, providing a wider perspective over Amasya and the valley.
The day introduces an idea that continues throughout the journey: geography helps us understand history.
We also make time for Amasya’s local food and everyday life rather than treating the city only as an overnight stop.
Day 2 — From Amasya Towards the Hittite Heartland
We continue from Amasya towards Çorum and begin moving into the geographical heartland associated with the Hittite world.
The day combines cultural exploration with walking rather than functioning simply as a vehicle transfer.
According to the confirmed route and local conditions, a selected countryside walk introduces the landscape before we continue towards the Hattusa region.
The Hittite capital did not exist in isolation. Valleys, agricultural land, water sources, mountain routes and neighbouring settlements formed part of the world surrounding the city.
Day 3 — Hattusa, Yazılıkaya & Alacahöyük
Today is devoted to the archaeological heart of the journey.
Hattusa was the capital of the Hittite Empire and one of the major political and religious centres of Late Bronze Age Anatolia.
Rather than rushing between individual monuments, we allow time to understand the scale and organisation of the city and its relationship with the surrounding terrain.
Fortifications, monumental gates, temple areas and the royal centre developed within a remarkable Central Anatolian landscape.
Nearby Yazılıkaya adds another dimension to the story. Its natural rock chambers contain some of the most important surviving examples of Hittite relief art.
We also continue to Alacahöyük, allowing us to place the imperial Hittite story within the deeper archaeological history of Central Anatolia.
Day 4 — Şapinuva, İncesu Canyon & Departure
The final day takes us beyond the monumental landscape of the Hittite capital.
Şapinuva provides another perspective on the political, religious and administrative geography of Hittite Anatolia.
We combine archaeology with the nearby landscape of İncesu Canyon.
Walking brings nature back into the journey and provides a fitting conclusion to four days in which archaeology is repeatedly connected with geography.
The exact walking programme depends on seasonal and local conditions. After the day’s exploration, onward travel is arranged according to the confirmed itinerary.
Why Walk to Understand Hattusa?
Ancient cities were shaped by more than walls and buildings.
Water, valleys, agricultural land, defensive positions and routes between settlements influenced where cities developed.
Hattusa is particularly rewarding when viewed within this wider landscape.
Walking allows us to slow down and observe the relationship between terrain and settlement.
We do not claim that every modern path follows an ancient Hittite road. Instead, walking becomes a way to understand the geography in which the Hittite capital developed.
Beyond the Hittite Capital
Many Hattusa tours concentrate on Hattusa, Yazılıkaya and Alacahöyük within a single day.
Our journey gives the region more time.
Amasya introduces a very different historical landscape. Walking helps us understand the geography surrounding the archaeological sites. Şapinuva expands the story beyond the imperial capital, while İncesu Canyon brings us back into the natural landscape.
The result is not simply a longer Hattusa tour.
It is a journey through Central Anatolia using archaeology, walking and landscape to connect places that are usually visited separately.
Local Food & Everyday Anatolia
The journey is also about modern Central Anatolia.
Local restaurants, regional food, small towns and everyday encounters along the route are part of travelling through the region.
We do not stage encounters with local people. Travelling slowly and spending several days within the region simply creates natural opportunities to experience places beyond archaeological sites.
Extend Your Hittite Journey
Begin with Ankara
Travellers with a particular interest in archaeology can begin their journey in Ankara and include the Museum of Anatolian Civilizations before continuing into the Hittite heartland.
Continue to Cappadocia
The journey can also continue south into Cappadocia, creating a longer exploration of Central Anatolia that combines Hittite archaeology with the walking landscapes of Cappadocia.
Private and Tailor-Made
Four days is a useful framework rather than an inflexible itinerary.
The final programme is shaped around your dates, arrival and departure plans, archaeological interests and walking experience.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is this a day tour from Cappadocia?
No. This is a multi-day journey designed for travellers who want to spend more time within the Hittite landscape. A separate private Hattusa day tour from Cappadocia can also be arranged.
How many days do I need for Hattusa?
Hattusa itself can be visited within a day, but this four-day journey explores the wider region through archaeology, walking and landscape.
Is this an archaeological tour or a walking holiday?
Both elements are important. Archaeology provides the historical framework, while selected walks help us understand the surrounding landscape.
Do we follow ancient Hittite roads?
We do not claim that modern walking paths necessarily follow ancient Hittite roads. Walking is used to understand the geography and cultural landscape surrounding the archaeological sites.
Can the journey begin in Ankara?
Yes. An Ankara extension can be arranged, particularly for travellers who would like to visit the Museum of Anatolian Civilizations.
Can I continue to Cappadocia?
Yes. Cappadocia can be combined with this journey as part of a longer Central Anatolia itinerary.
