Mining influenced the economy and settlement of this mountain region for centuries. Historical research records intensive mining activity across Gümüşhane during the Ottoman period. This activity became particularly important during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries.

In Krom Valley itself, archaeological and cultural heritage studies document historic religious buildings and settlements. They also record evidence connected with the valley’s mining past.

This history is one reason we prefer to explore Krom slowly. The valley becomes easier to understand when we consider the buildings together with the terrain rather than photograph them as isolated ruins.

Local dishes and regional ingredients can also become part of the experience. We do not want to separate the walking programme from lunch or village stops. Instead, we use these moments to understand more about the place we are travelling through.

We cannot — and should not — script exactly what we will encounter in advance. The people we meet and what happens locally will vary from one journey to another. Seasonal conditions will also shape the experience.

Our walk does not aim to provide access to every historic building. Conditions, access and preservation vary. Instead, we select a practical route that helps us understand the character of the valley while respecting its archaeological landscape.

Krom did not exist in isolation. Historic settlements such as İmera and other communities occupied the surrounding mountain geography. Routes also connected these valleys with Gümüşhane, Trabzon and the Black Sea.
