Description
Kars Ani Private Tour – Beyond a Day Trip
Our Kars Ani private tour is a five-day heritage walking journey through the layered history and living traditions of northeastern Türkiye. Rather than treating Ani as a brief stop, we give its extraordinary setting and monuments the time they deserve. We then connect the medieval landscape with the streets of Kars, the food heritage of Boğatepe and the pine forests of Sarıkamış.
This is a private journey for travellers who like to explore on foot but do not want a demanding trekking holiday. Walks are part of the story: they help us understand why people built cities here, how different communities shaped the region and how local life continues today.
Why Choose Our Private Kars and Ani Heritage Journey?
Ani: Read a Medieval City in Its Landscape
The UNESCO-listed Archaeological Site of Ani stands on a plateau above a deep ravine near the Armenian border. Its churches, defensive structures, civic remains and Islamic monuments reflect centuries of interaction between Armenian, Georgian, Byzantine and Muslim traditions. We focus on the urban story and the landscape rather than rushing through a checklist of monuments.
Kars: Streets, Stonework and Borderland History
In Kars, guided walks reveal an unusual mix of architecture and historical memory. We explore the old streets, the castle surroundings and selected heritage buildings as access allows. Local cuisine provides another way to understand this meeting place of communities and traditions.
Boğatepe: Food as Living Heritage
Boğatepe is more than a tasting stop. The village is known for its dairy traditions and the Eko Müze Zavot initiative. Subject to prior arrangements, we can meet local producers, hear how cheese-making knowledge has been passed down and enjoy regional flavours. Any workshop, tasting or museum visit is confirmed in advance rather than assumed.
Sarıkamış: Nature and Historical Memory
The pine landscapes of Sarıkamış offer a change of pace. We choose a suitable forest walk according to the season and the group’s interests, with respectful interpretation of the area’s history. We do not turn this heritage-focused trip into a long-distance hiking programme.
Who Is This Kars and Ani Tour For?
Choose this journey if you enjoy archaeology, photography, architecture, food culture and comfortable walking. The experience suits private couples and small groups who value a guide’s interpretation and time for meaningful local encounters. Travellers seeking several full hiking days should instead choose our separate Hidden Valleys of Kars walking programme once available.
Explore Further
For a wider perspective on how archaeology connects to geography and everyday life, read our guide to exploring ancient cities in Türkiye. The official Ministry of Culture profile of Boğatepe’s cheese heritage offers additional background.
Combine Kars and Ani with the Eastern Black Sea
If you would like to discover more of northeastern Türkiye, consider our Maçahel to Kars private journey. This tailor-made extension connects the forested landscapes of the Eastern Black Sea with Şavşat’s traditional villages and the historic highlands of Kars.
It is an ideal option for travellers who want to combine cultural heritage, gentle walking, mountain landscapes and local experiences in one longer journey.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many days do I need for Kars and Ani?
Five days allow us to explore Ani at a considered pace and add Kars, Boğatepe and Sarıkamış without turning every day into a long road trip.
Is this a private Kars and Ani tour?
Yes. We prepare the programme for your own party and confirm dates, guide arrangements, accommodation and transfers in your quotation.
Is this a difficult hiking tour?
No. It is a heritage-focused journey with city walks, archaeological terrain and selected short countryside walks. Uneven ground at Ani still requires suitable footwear.
Can we meet cheese producers in Boğatepe?
We can request a local visit or tasting, subject to availability and advance confirmation. We never guarantee a particular producer or workshop without an arrangement.
Can we add long walks in Susuz or Borluk Valley?
Yes, as a separately designed hiking itinerary. Those longer trails belong to our dedicated Kars hiking programme rather than this heritage tour.
Where does the journey start and finish?
We propose Kars as the starting and finishing point. Airport transfers, flight timing and the final route will be agreed before booking.
How much does the Kars and Ani private tour cost?
As this is a tailor-made private journey, the price depends on your travel dates, group size, accommodation preferences and selected services. Please contact us for a personalised quotation.

5-Day Kars & Ani Private Heritage Itinerary
Day 1 – Arrival in Kars | Stone Architecture and Local Flavours
Meet in Kars according to your agreed arrival arrangements. After check-in, explore selected historic streets and the area around Kars Castle with your guide. Discover how the city’s built environment reflects its frontier position and changing political history. We leave time for a regional meal and an introduction to the days ahead. The length of the walk depends on your flight arrival.
Day 2 – Ani | A Full Day of Archaeological Exploration
Travel to Ani for an unhurried guided exploration of its medieval cityscape. Read the city through its walls, religious buildings, surviving urban spaces and dramatic position above the river gorge. We consider the Armenian Bagratid period and the many other communities that shaped the site. This is the day’s main walking experience; we do not add a second long hike. Site access, restoration areas and opening times are checked before departure.
Day 3 – Boğatepe | Cheese Traditions and Village Life
Travel into the countryside to Boğatepe. Learn about the village’s dairy culture and, where advance appointments are available, visit the Eko Müze Zavot or meet a local producer. A short rural walk may complement the experience if weather and access permit. We allow time for conversation and local food rather than treating the village as a quick photo stop. Return arrangements are confirmed with the final itinerary.
Day 4 – Sarıkamış | Pine Forests and Historical Landscapes
Explore Sarıkamış, where forests and historical memory form a different side of Kars province. Your guide selects a suitable nature walk based on the season, trail conditions and group ability. We may include an appropriate cultural or historical stop if access is permitted. This is a nature-and-history day, not a strenuous summit trek.
Day 5 – Kars Museum or Final City Walk | Departure
Depending on museum opening hours and your flight, visit a selected museum or enjoy a final guided walk in Kars. Transfer to the agreed departure point. The last day’s activities may be shortened if your flight leaves early.
