Göbeklitepe – Neolithic Upper Mesopotamia

Göbeklitepe represents one of the most important archaeological discoveries for understanding the Neolithic period in Upper Mesopotamia.

Its monumental structures were erected during the Pre-Pottery Neolithic, approximately between 9600 and 8200 BCE. The site’s distinctive T-shaped limestone pillars, some decorated with animals and other imagery, provide remarkable evidence for the communities living in the region more than eleven thousand years ago.

Day 1 – Arrival, Göbeklitepe, Karahantepe & Şanlıurfa Museums

The journey begins with arrival in Şanlıurfa. Depending on flight schedules, you may arrive on the morning of the programme or choose to spend the previous night in the city.

Our archaeological exploration begins with Göbeklitepe and Karahantepe. Göbeklitepe contains monumental structures dating to the Pre-Pottery Neolithic, approximately 9600–8200 BCE. Karahantepe forms part of the wider Neolithic archaeological landscape of the Şanlıurfa region and provides another perspective on the communities, architecture and symbolic world of this period.

Where timing allows, we continue to the Şanlıurfa Archaeology Museum and Haleplibahçe Mosaic Museum. Together, the sites and museum collections provide a broader chronological context for the archaeology of Upper Mesopotamia.

Lunch provides our first introduction to the regional cuisine. Later in the day, we transfer towards the Mount Nemrut region and settle into our accommodation. The exact accommodation and meal arrangements will be specified in the confirmed programme.

Day 2 – Perre Ancient City & İndere (Zey) Canyon Loop Walk – Approx. 17 km

After breakfast, we transfer towards Perre Ancient City for an archaeological visit before continuing to the walking part of the day.

The example route is an approximately 17 km loop walk in İndere Canyon, also known as Zey Canyon. Following the streambed through the canyon, this moderate-level walk combines time on foot with an introduction to the landscape around Adıyaman.

The walking route may be adjusted according to the season, weather, stream conditions and the walking level of the group. The final itinerary will confirm the archaeological visit, walking arrangements and transfers.

After the walk, we return to our accommodation.

Day 3 – Cendere Bridge, Kahta Castle & Arsameia – Approx. 14 km

Our walk begins at Cendere Bridge and continues via Kahta Castle, finishing at Arsameia. The route combines archaeological visits with walking through the valleys and mountain landscapes of the region.

The planned route is approximately 14 km. Completing the entire distance is not compulsory: the walk can be shortened according to the group’s energy levels and requirements. Any supporting transfers will be specified in the confirmed programme.

At Arsameia, we explore an important royal centre of the Kingdom of Commagene, placing its monuments within the surrounding landscape.

Depending on the season, access, timing and weather, we may continue towards Mount Nemrut for a late-afternoon or sunset visit. This remains optional, and visibility cannot be guaranteed.

We return to our accommodation after the day’s programme.

Day 4 – Mount Nemrut Archaeological Terraces & Loop Walk – Approx. 13 km

Today combines a visit to the archaeological terraces of Mount Nemrut with an approximately 13 km loop walk.

After a transfer to the starting point, we begin our walk towards the summit area, reaching the monumental terraces and tumulus at approximately kilometre 6. Here, we explore the sanctuary of Antiochos I and its statues within the mountain landscape.

For those who prefer to finish walking at this point, a return by private transfer can be arranged. Please discuss this option with us when planning your journey so that the arrangements and any additional cost can be confirmed.

For walkers continuing along the loop, the section after the summit is the easier and particularly enjoyable part of the route. The complete walk offers more time to experience the surrounding mountain landscape beyond the archaeological terraces.

The final walking arrangements depend on weather, local access and the group’s requirements. After the day’s programme, we return to our accommodation.

Day 5 – Sırakaya to Arsameia & Departure from Adıyaman – Approx. 7 km

After breakfast and check-out, we begin our final walk in Sırakaya village and continue towards Arsameia. This approximately 7 km, easy-to-moderate walk provides another opportunity to experience the landscape of Commagene on foot before completing the journey.

The day’s walking arrangements will be planned around your departure time. For an earlier flight, we can shorten or omit the walk. The confirmed itinerary will specify the route, timing and transfer arrangements.

After the day’s programme, we transfer to Adıyaman Airport according to your confirmed flight schedule.

Shorter & Longer Mount Nemrut Göbeklitepe Tours

This five-day itinerary is an example rather than a fixed package. If you have fewer days, we can concentrate on Göbeklitepe, Şanlıurfa and the principal sites of the Mount Nemrut and Commagene landscape.

With additional days, we can include more walking, spend more time around Şanlıurfa and Adıyaman, or continue into other parts of southeastern and central Turkey.

Continue to Mardin, Midyat & Tur Abdin

Walking Level & Daily Distances

The sample programme includes four walking stages:

• Day 2 – İndere (Zey) Canyon: Approximately 17 km, following the streambed on a moderate-level loop walk.
• Day 3 – Cendere Bridge, Kahta Castle & Arsameia: Approximately 14 km. The walk can be shortened according to the group’s energy levels and requirements.
• Day 4 – Mount Nemrut: Approximately 13 km on a loop route. The summit area is reached at around kilometre 6, where a return by private transfer can be arranged. The remaining section of the loop is easier.
• Day 5 – Sırakaya to Arsameia: Approximately 7 km, with an easy-to-moderate walking level. The day’s arrangements depend on your departure time.

Terrain & Walking Conditions

Walking conditions may include mountain paths, rocky ground, uneven surfaces, village tracks, valleys, slopes and exposed terrain.

Trail conditions can change according to season and weather. Some archaeological sites also involve steps, uneven stone surfaces and uphill walking.

Mount Nemrut & Elevation

The archaeological terraces of Mount Nemrut lie at approximately 2,150 metres. Conditions there can differ considerably from those in Şanlıurfa, Adıyaman and the lower valleys.

Wind, cooler temperatures, cloud and rapidly changing weather are possible even when conditions at lower elevations are mild. Please bring appropriate layers for the mountain according to the season.

Clothing & Walking Equipment

For programmes that include the longer walking stages, we recommend suitable hiking footwear, comfortable walking clothing and a daypack for water and personal items.

Trekking poles can be useful on uneven or descending terrain. Sun protection, rain protection and additional warm layers may also be required depending on the season.
