Santa lies within Dumanlı village in Gümüşhane Province. Türkiye’s official Culture Portal explains that mining helped the settlement grow between the 16th and 18th centuries. Today, visitors can still see seven historic neighbourhoods and more than 300 houses. Churches, fountains and other remains also survive across the area.

Santa has official archaeological and natural protection. However, it feels very different from an archaeological site with an entrance gate and a marked visitor route.

Santa differs from established long-distance routes such as the Lycian Way.

The wider area contains old roads, forest tracks, settlement paths and mountain routes. They do not form one continuous tourist trail with consistent signs. Access also requires planning because several mountain roads approach the area.

For these reasons, we recommend a guided walk with organised local transfers, especially for first-time visitors.

Day 1 — Vazelon, Sümela and the Highlands

We leave Trabzon and travel into the mountains around Maçka. The day can include a walk towards historic Vazelon Monastery. We can then visit Sümela Monastery before continuing to our accommodation in the Sarıtaş highlands.

Day 2 — Walking Through Santa Valley

We spend the second day exploring Santa on foot. Instead of seeing only the best-known ruins, we walk through the valley and between former neighbourhoods.

Old roads, forest tracks and settlement paths help us understand how these communities once connected with the mountain landscape.

Weather, local access and the group’s walking experience may change the exact route.

Day 3 — High Mountains Behind Trabzon

On our final day, we walk through the high mountain and plateau landscape behind Trabzon. We choose the route according to current conditions and the group’s walking experience. Afterwards, we return towards Trabzon.

This landscape also appears in discussions about Xenophon’s Anabasis. Xenophon describes the famous moment when the Ten Thousand saw the Black Sea and cried “Thalatta! Thalatta!” — “The sea! The sea!”

Researchers still debate the exact location of Mount Theches and the route that the army followed in this region. For this reason, we do not describe our walk as the proven historical route.

Instead, the ancient account gives us another way to discuss the landscape. We can look at the mountains, possible passes and the connection between the interior and the Black Sea coast.

More Than Ruins

Santa is more than a collection of abandoned stone buildings.

The valleys, forests and highland routes help explain why communities developed here. They also show how people moved between the settlements and the surrounding mountains.
